Interesting 4 quarters with Collingwood going down by 17 points in the end making this their second loss of the 2019 season. However, the low score was indicative of the tough defence on both sides.
Stand out for Collingwood, Ash Brazill, who at one point seemed to be a back, in the ruck and a forward as the ball moved into the Collingwood goal end. Her intelligent play held Melbourne to a low scoring game in the first two quarters with her outstanding defence stopping the ball just in front of the posts.
The Pies were formidable in defence in the first half which saw the Dees with a lot of possessions and unable to convert. Conversely the Pies remained scoreless for the 2nd quarter and a hurried kick by Ash Brazill still didn’t bring reward. After the Collingwood Captain, Steph Chiocci, called a group huddle at half time, the Pies broke out with more energy and tighter defence in the 3rd quarter with Lambert delivering solid tackling throughout. However, things weren’t much better on the scoring front.
Schleicher, Bonnici and Chiocci were also outstanding in the second half, opening up the game which helped Collingwood forward, Sarah Dargan, finally bag a goal in the fourth term.
The Dees had a mass of possessions and at times a nice running game with players finding space away from Magpie defence. O’Dea gave them their opening goal in the 2nd quarter whilst Lauren Pearce took an outstanding mark directly in front of goals and tidied up with 6 points. Melbourne dominated in the 2nd quarter and from there, took control of the game.
Tyla Hanks had a great Debut bagging two goals in the 3rd quarter and is a player to watch. Tegan Cunningham gave her all in defence and managed to shut down the Magpie attack.
Injuries and Umpires
Emma Grant, Collingwood, left the field in pain with a suspect shoulder injury and will know her fate after scans during the week.
Sharni Layton, Collingwood, copped a shocking blow and retired to the bench in the 4th term with blood nose. Whilst Steph Chiocci got absolutely creamed after the mark and was not rewarded with a 50 metre free.
Final Score: 1 3 9 Pies 3 8 26 Dees
Melbourne have a good team on their hands especially if they can settle earlier in their game. They have a good running game and get plenty of ball. If they can work on converting possessions, they will be hard to beat.
Collingwood have a young team with a lot of talent but seem to lack cohesion. If they study Ash Brazill’s game and put some of her footwork, ball watching skills and play reading into training the result would be a very strong, well rounded athletic team. 2019 will be a good building year for them and they will be the team to watch in 2020. Go Pies!
Hi, in a nutshell I love my Pies, Collingwood Magpies that is. I have loved the Black and White since I was 8 years old. I also love my AFL, AFLW and Netball. These are my thoughts on each game and to me it's Pretty Black and White.
