Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Melbourne Demons V Collingwood Magpies AFL – MCG  Queens Birthday Monday 10 June 2019 The Big Freeze

The Pies came flying out of the blocks but were unable to convert. The Dees had the will just not the way and a double head clash saw two Melbourne players leave the ground bleeding. Sidebottom was enjoying the game and putting in plenty of effort around the ball. The Magpies had a hunger for the ball with Varcoe stealing the ball in an intercept/tap and Hoskin-Elliott diving on it to secure possession. The combination of Mihocek and Stephenson produced Collingwood’s first goal. Sier was a welcome addition to the mid field in the absence of Beams and he and Aish handed out some hard tackles. Sidebottom did a bit of give and go as the Magpies found space and were brutal in defence. Howe did a big spoil removing any chance of the Dees scoring and Mihocek was instrumental in a goal from De Goey. Howe took a sensational mark that wasn’t paid, again! Even the commentators got in on the grumbling. Varcoe’s second and third efforts produced a smother in the Pies 50 and gave Cox the chance to put boot to ball and add a point to the tally. The Dee’s were playing a very predictable game and the Pies were reading it well. The Dees got their first goal 7 seconds prior to the first break. The Pies led by 15 points at the break.

The second term started slowly but the Dees warmed up and Petracca (Dees) scored a goal. Stephenson looked great and did a lot of work but had difficulty scoring anything other than a point. Grundy stepped up and kicked a nice goal for the Pies after being awarded a free kick. Team effort cleared the ball from the defence end and Mihocek had a run, a bounce, and got the ball in De Goey’s general direction who soccered it off the ground producing a goal. Sier had a snap and added a point. Further teamwork produced a goal from Mihocek. The Pies defence was very efficient, and they led by 21 points at the main break.

The third quarter saw Darcy Moore at his finest with a sensational mark in front of the Dee’s goal. Hoskin-Elliott, Treloar and Varcoe all put in second efforts. Varcoe showed off his kick placement skills delivering the ball to Stephenson who took an awesome mark and then put the cherry on top with a goal. The Dee’s snuck in a goal and De Goey delivered his third. Sidebottom was having a stellar game and Treloar scored a goal from the centre bounce. Stephenson shared the love and booted the ball to Hoskin-Elliott who goaled. Mayne worked hard and put his body on the line to help maintain possession for the Pies. Collingwood led by 35 points at the final break.

The final term saw the Pies in slow motion as the Dee’s scored a quick goal. Moore, Grundy, Maynard and Crisp worked together to stop the Dee’s scoring and Mayne intercepted a possible goal. The Dee’s had 41 clearances to the Pies 24 but were never really a threat even after scoring from a ‘deliberate’ out call. Mihocek was again instrumental in a goal from Hoskin-Elliott as the Pies fired up in the last 5 minutes. Stephenson continued to dominate and ran down the opposition and delivered the ball to Cox for a set shot. Cox goaled and then Thomas in quick succession. The Pies took an easy win by 41 points.

The Neil Daniher Trophy recipient was Adam Treloar. Congratulations Adam!

Final Score  Dees  7 15  57            Pies  15 8  98   Pies by 41 points

My Take
This game is a highlight of the AFL Calendar and a good fund raiser for a the MND cause.
It seemed to me like the Dee’s were never really in it but had moments that would unfurrow the odd Melbourne supporter’s brow. Collingwood showed finesse and at times looked as though they would run away with the game by 100 points. The Pies defensive efforts were superb for most of the game and they played with heart especially when it came to the tackles. Again, this week you could throw a blanket over most of the players for best on ground and it really was a team effort. Not sure what is happening with Stephenson and Mihocek and their accuracy. My advice; go back to what you were doing before because it worked. Don’t over think it just get on with it.

And the Umpires, week in week out with their questionable calls is getting old very fast. But being a Collingwood supporter unfortunately we are used to it. I feel sad that every week Jeremy Howe is robbed of a great mark. It is a good thing he is resilient.

This win has given Collingwood second place on the ladder and they have a bye this week which is a good opportunity to rest some weary bodies. Looking forward to the following week against the Doggies. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Collingwood V Fremantle  AFL – MCG Saturday 1 June 2019 Sir Doug Nicolls Round

Collingwood started well with a point from Mihocek and a smother produced a goal from De Goey. Moore was fantastic with his spoils in defence and De Goey added another point. The Captain, Pendlebury intercepted a Fremantle kick for goal and send it back to the Pies 50 resulting in another point from Mihocek. Sidebottom was kept busy with his match up on Ed Langdon and Varcoe showed his skill under pressure with beautiful kick placement. A miss match of Aish on Hogan (Freo) gave them a goal. The Pies defence was relentless and great teamwork moved the ball out of Freo’s 50. Varcoe continued to work hard delivering and taking some hard knocks. The Pies were under siege in their 50 and struggled to convert. Roughead and Greenwood continued to be outstanding in defence making it difficult for Freo to execute their game plan. At this point Freo had more inside 50’s than Collingwood. Teamwork brought the ball down to the Pies 50 and Reid was given a free for a shepherding penalty against Freo and goaled. Fremantle scored a goal off the back of what should have been a free kick to Howe after a hand on the shoulder and a trip; accidental or otherwise, giving them the lead by a goal. Pendlebury tackled hard and got the free and a shot for goal which he delivered on. At the end of the first quarter the scores were level.

The start of the second quarter saw Collingwood working much harder to get the ball into their 50 but they were unable to convert with Brown adding a point. Mihocek had safe hands all game but struggled with his accuracy when kicking for goal. Things were looking up as Collingwood had won 10 of the previous 15 clearances. Fremantle struggled with their accuracy and added another point. Reid handed out a strong tackle after a kick to him went awry. De Goey crumbed beautifully and goaled. Maynard was strong all day and very effective in defence. Hoskin-Elliott gave a tidy kick to Treloar and then on to Stephenson for a shot at goal. It was a tight angle and this week his kick was perfect. Another goal for the Pies. The combination of Thomas, Varcoe and Beams gave the Pies a much-needed goal. Aish offered up tidy kicks and the Pies began to find their composure and space around the ground. Collingwood’s use of the middle corridor was shut down by Fremantle and the umpires argued over what was a mark by Grundy and a push in the back for Lobb (Freo). Mihocek had another shot at goal and added a point. The Pies had managed 61% of time in their 50 and Howe was sensational with his one-handed mark. Mayne placed a clever kick under pressure and Varcoe gave 2nd and 3rd efforts. The Pies led by 13 points at the main break.

The third term saw Fremantle come flying out of the blocks and score 2 quick goals; and another one of which was touched by Mayne and still paid. Insert angry emoji here! The Collingwood midfield struggled and Freo took advantage and scored another goal, their 4th in a row. As the Pies got into the quarter, they transitioned well from defence but were unable to convert. Brown added another point. Sidebottom was hard working and Hoskin-Elliott had a successful long shot at goal. Freo led by 9 points and the Pies decided it was time to tidy up their game. De Goey had eyes for the ball in front of goals which came off the back of a smother from Maynard. Teamwork from Beams, Varcoe, Brown and Reid saw another shot at goal, but they were beaten by the siren. Fremantle led by 4 points at the final break.

The start of the final quarter saw Collingwood determined to improve their game. Grundy won the centre bounce and kicked straight to the goal square. Pendlebury stepped up and kicked the first goal for the quarter giving the Pies the lead by 2 points. Stephenson used his speed to get the ball to Reid who was taken high and goaled for the Pies giving them the lead by 8 points. The Pies had 73% disposal efficiency to 70% of Fremantle. Freo responded with a goal and Roughead was good in defence again this week. Thomas had a shot at goal from 45 and was accurate. The Pies led by 8 points again. Aish hand balled with Mundy (Freo) all over him and delivered an accidental punch to the face and a blood nose. Varcoe applied excellent pressure and cause the player with the ball to run to far and almost dakked him in the process. Freo added another point to their tally and then a goal. The Pies led by 3 points. The final 5 minutes saw desperate footy from both sides and it became a goal for goal, point for point game. Unfortunately, the Pies were unable to pull off a successful last quarter as they had done in previous weeks and lost by 4 points.

Final Score:  Pies 11 9 75               Dockers 11 13 79   Freo by 4 points
My Take
OK. So, it was not the fairy tale game that fans hoped for and as a team it was a lacklustre performance. Some players performed well, and others performed well on and off. There was a heaviness about the team and from external appearances there was a lack of cohesion and the ‘go get ‘em’ mentality was not there. They also probably underestimated the opposition. For some reason all teams tend to bring their best against Collingwood and in doing so uncover the team weaknesses. That being said we still have some players out of the side with injuries and we had a few returning and possibly a lack of match fitness.

The beauty of a game like this is that there is time to work out the kinks and do some team bonding prior to the finals. As a team they need to refocus and make sure that they (players, Coaches, admin etc) are all on the same page and go back to the drawing board and start again. They need to believe that they can win against any side and that they are, as individuals, very talented. After all, if they weren’t, they wouldn’t be playing AFL. I think this team has the skills and ability to win the Grand final this year they just need to play 4 full quarters of footy and believe that they can do it. 80k plus fans can’t be wrong. Looking forward to playing the Dees at the G next week.  Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Sydney V Collingwood AFL – SCG  Friday 24 May 2019

Collingwood started as they do most weeks, hard and bringing the defensive pressure on the opposition. Stephenson had the first shot at goal on a hard angle but only managed a point. Bucks took the same angled kick during the week and converted it. Maybe he needs to pass on a few pointers. Sam Reid was dangerous for the Swans and gave them their first goal. Thomas and Mihocek combined for yet another point. Buddy eluded the struggling defenders to give the Swans their second goal. Aish, who was fantastic all night had a snap, but it was wide. Treloar added another point but no goal. Roughead was sensational on Buddy and kept his involvement in the game to a minimum. With Buddy contained, Sam Reid was the target and produced the 3rd goal for the Swans. Greenwood was having an amazing game and brought the ball down from the defence end. Wells was given a 50-metre penalty and gave the Pies their first goal with three and a half minutes left in the quarter. Thomas was larey with his beautiful hands and great footwork and the combination of Pendlebury and Stephenson produced yet another point. The Pies trailed by 9 points at the first break.
The second quarter saw the Swans pull out the hard tackles and doing some damage to the already depleted Collingwood side. Phillips was his usual hard-working self  and Thomas snapped and added another point to the black and white tally. Roughead continued to spoil Buddy’s game. And after a bit of teamwork Pendlebury dribbled another goal through for the Pies. The Magpies started winning the clearances and the one on one contests giving them a lot more time in their 50 this quarter. Wells booted another goal for the Pies and the Swans began to struggle with the previous 8 scores from Collingwood. The Swans added another 2 goals and Collingwood led by a point. Stephenson made some great leads and Aish used his outstanding kick placement skills to put the ball into the perfect space for Stephenson who goaled. Thomas had a shot at goal but hit the post. Sidebottom stepped up and had plenty of touches and Brown handed out some good tackles. Wells copped a hard hit and was winded seeing him need a little recovery time on the bench. At the main break the Pies led by 9 points. The major ball winners were Pendlebury and Treloar.
The third term saw both teams come out eager to score. The Swans added another point and Sam Reid scored his 4th goal. The combination of Sidebottom, Mihocek and Reid added a much-needed point to the black and white total. Wells limped off the field after a tackle giving him a problem with his knee. Brown crumbed beautifully and snapped a goal. Beams had a snap, but no result and Howe took his trademark leap and took a terrific mark. Greenwood was very effective all game and after much scrambling Mihocek had a quick snap and goaled for the Pies. Sam Reid managed a 5th goal and was probably mismatched given the ease for him to mark the ball in the Swans’ 50. Buddy goaled again and Aler was not called for his constant pushing in the back which should have been a free for Reid. The Swans led by 8 points at the final break.
The Swans scored a behind quickly and Mayne responded from the ground with a goal early in the final term. Brown got the ball straight from the centre bounce and had a shot from 45 metres out and scored. Grundy added a point and Reid finally got a call for the push in the back from Aler and was rewarded with a goal. The Pies defence was relentless, and the Swans struggled but still managed a goal. The Pies led by 3 points at the 3-minute mark and Mayne kicked another goal for Collingwood giving them the lead by 8 points. Buddy had another shot at goal which was touched by Aish. Collingwood won the game by 7 points.

Final Score  Pies  11 14  80           Swans  11 7  73 Pies by 7 points
My Take
This week was the Indigenous round and Wells gave great representation and was unfortunately injured which may signal the end of a sterling career. I was saddened to hear that the MRP gave Varcoe a one-week suspension denying him the chance to participate in this round, but he is tenacious and will live to fight another day.
Collingwood’s list of injured players continues to grow and somehow, the team manages to get over the line even if they have to limp. With a decimated backline and Roughead left to lead the charge, who by the way did an outstanding job on Franklin and managed, for the most part, to keep him out of the game. And the loss of some of our damaging forwards, the Pies could have been forgiven if they didn’t win. But they did. They showed that it’s not just big men and big names that win a game but also big hearts and determination. Sam Reid (Swans) was mismatched with Magden coming up from the VFL who was not as slick as needed. I don’t think he should be condemned as he had a very experienced opponent and like most Collingwood players, I feel he will improve with time. Think back to Callum Brown. There has been an army of naysayers against that young man and what an outstanding game he had, and he continues to be an integral part of the Magpie line up each week. Greenwood hit his straps and was valuable all night. Aish had a fantastic work rate and was involved in so much of the play. An intelligent man I know mused that he had a bit of Pendlebury about him; the whole time, space and vision thing. I think he’s right. Grundy gave his all and when he was off briefly for the blood rule the Swans took advantage. Stephenson worked hard but took time to adjust without Elliott and De Goey. Phillips also stepped up and was well and truly in the mix. Pendlebury demonstrated that a good Captain gets amongst it and scores and Sidebottom although quiet in the first quarter knew when to lift. Crisp and Mayne also worked hard and again you could throw a blanket over the number of players who really worked hard for the whole game. They are a cohesive unit and no one player is seen as better than the next. They adapt and step up and support each other. Those are the actions of a winning side. Looking forward to some of the injured returning next week against Fremantle, hopefully. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Collingwood V St Kilda AFL – MCG  Saturday 18 March 2019

The first quarter started with Langdon giving away a 50m penalty from a push after a mark. Mihocek got a free from a push in the back and scored Collingwood’s first goal. And whilst the Pies had plenty of options in the goal square, they were not playing their game. Stephenson showed his work rate with a give and go with Mihocek and a goal for the Pies. Grundy was his usual hard-working self in the ruck and around the field. Although the game was scrappy Maynard was handing hard tackles in defence making it hard for St Kilda to score. Sidebottom worked well with Stephenson, but the team had difficulty transitioning from defence to attack which limited their options and opportunity to get into their 50. Mihocek booted a deep kick to Reid who juggled the ball and took the mark. Reid was settled this week and kicked his first goal for the Pies since coming back. Varcoe was a work horse and tackled hard and gave plenty of second and third efforts around the field. Varcoe and Phillips combined for a goal after many Collingwood hands brought the ball in the Pies 50.  At the first break Collingwood led by 10 points and had 30 more disposals than St Kilda.
The start of the second term saw The Saints bust out and score quickly. Mihocek and Browne worked well to give Mihocek a goal. Varcoe ran down his opponent and was rewarded with a shot for goal and added 6 points to the black and white tally. Mihocek took a knock to the head an spent a short time on the bench. Meanwhile Treloar got a finger in the eye with a late hit to the head from a mark. St Kilda increased their tackling pressure and out did the Pies 21-17. The Pies were slow to man up and St Kilda took off and started scoring. Langdon hurt his knee and was strapped up at quarter time and was still propy during the quarter. Collingwood struggled to get the ball in their 50 and the Saints dominated the quarter 14 – 3 inside 50’s and used speed and space to improve their score line. The Pies started to settle, and Beams added a point to the total and for a short time the Saints led by a point. However, the star-studded line up that is Collingwood used teamwork and Sidebottom kicked a goal. The Pies were back in front at the main break by 5 points.
Collingwood came flying out of the box in the third quarter. Reid hit the post on what looked like a good shot and only managed a behind. Thomas, ever vigilant, ran down his player got the ball to Stephenson who passed it to Reid who dribbled it through for another goal. Beams looked on target for a goal, but it was touched. The Magpies settled into their own game and had much better pressure in their 50. St Kilda managed 2 goals in a row and with a point to each team the scores were level. Forward pressure by the Pies and some great teamwork from Mihocek to Treloar and then on to Thomas produced another black and white goal. The Saints were quick to respond with a goal of their own and took the lead by a point. Collingwood found their rhythm on the clearances with Beams collecting the tap from Grundy and kicked it to Reid who scored another goal for Collingwood. Pies led by 5 and the Saints came back with a goal of their own and led by a point for the third time this quarter. Roughead did a good job of stepping up without Moore and Langdon and this is where the game started to open up. Sidebottom ran through the play and turned the ball over at pace and passed it on to Hoskin-Elliott and then to Mihocek for a goal. Sidebottom got in on the clearances and Collingwood lifted the tempo. Stephenson was instrumental in the goal by Hoskin-Elliott. Wills worked hard showing that he was a good pick for the team this week. St Kilda scored another goal and Mayne was diligent in defence. The Pies led by 5 points at the final break.
The final term saw Collingwood maintain the tempo that they found in the latter part of the third quarter. Thomas had an early shot for goal and added a point. Maynard had a crack at goal from about 50 metres out but only managed a behind. Sidebottom produced some fancy footwork and gave the Saints something to worry about with a goal. Collingwood brought out pressure all over the field and the onslaught began. Sidebottom and Beams added another point each and some great teamwork from Hoskin Elliott, Varcoe and Pendlebury saw Stephenson bag another goal. Crisp pulled out some great defence and a huge kick to Reid which was almost a mark and crumbed by Varcoe who scored again for Collingwood. Greenwood kept the selectors happy with some good marks and Varcoe continued to give his all. Sidebottom was on a roll with some hard running and a nice kick to Mihocek adding 6 points to the tally. Hoskin-Elliott took a nice mark in front of goal but only managed a behind. Pendlebury scored a 50-metre penalty from a hard at hearing opponent, although it was clear that the umpire said “hold” not “play on”. The kick landed with Stephenson who has pulled out a good old-fashioned torpedo right through the middle of the sticks and well into the crowd. Mihocek had a mark of his own about 50 metres from goal on the siren and added on one last point against the Saints. Collingwood took away a 41-point win against the St Kilda.
Final Score  Pies  17 10 112          Saints 10 11 71  Pies by 41 points
My Take
Collingwood struggled to find their rhythm early in the game and rightly so with some key players missing. It was fantastic to see so many players step up all over the field. Losing Langdon was unexpected and hurt the Pies temporarily until the gap was filled. You could throw a blanket over most of the team for Best on Ground. The teamwork and comradery between these players was so nice to see.
Reid was a lot more settled this week and it showed with a little more accuracy and less nerves at the shots at goal and the confidence in his marking. Grundy was his usual hard-working self and Roughead looked like he had been with the side forever. Varcoe paid a beautiful tribute to his sister, Maggie, and I’m sure she would be looking down on his game with love and admiration for his work rate and all his effort. Sidebottom was all class as was Stephenson, yes even with that torpedo. Which by the way I think Bucks secretly loved, and Mihocek was sensational and instrumental in some goal assists even with 3 hard knocks to the head. Watching the AFL highlights he was involved in so much of the play up and down the field. Treloar also copped a finger in the eye but didn’t let it slow him down and Thomas was hard at work using speed and fancy footwork. It was a good result for a team that is losing players each week to injury although they are only minor, and most will probably be back in the side within a couple of weeks. It demonstrated just what a cohesive unit the Collingwood team is. Can’t wait for next week against Sydney. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Carlton V Collingwood AFL – MCG  Saturday 11 May 2019

5/11/2019

This game looked like Collingwood’s usual start, but it was not to be. Our first shot at goal fell short and the Blues responded with a point. It was good to see Mayne return after fracturing his spine. Elliott looked good early and had a run with 3 bounces and did a give and go. The Pies were not looking like their usual selves, but they found a way with a beautifully accurate kick from Pendlebury to Stephenson giving Collingwood their first goal. Langdon had some good spoils in defence and whilst there were many hands on the ball the Pies looked disorganised as the Blues applied great pressure in the Pies 50. Thomas was effective early and stole the ball out of the Blues 50 getting the ball to an easy target in Grundy. The Pies defence was intense and stopped the Blues from finishing giving them only a point. The ball made its way down to the Pies 50 and in all the mess Thomas had a quick grab and stab and scored Collingwood’s second goal. Curnow (Carlton) replied with a goal of his own. Elliott attempted a torpedo from about 55 metres out on the siren but didn’t add to the tally. The Pies led by 3 points at the first break.
The second quarter saw the Pies start hard and Mihocek taken high. He sent a long kick to Grundy. Grundy marked the ball and was assisted by De Goey screening his player. Grundy kicked his first goal for the year and the 3rd goal for the Pies. The Pies had impressive looking moments moving the ball up the field with some great kicks and marks but no points. Moore was run down with the ball and the Blues caught the Pies off guard and quickly moved the ball to their 50 but couldn’t convert. Roughead scored a free for a push in the back and Elliott put in second and third efforts on the ball in the Pies 50 but the ball made it back to the Blues 50. Carlton found space and another goal. Not to be outdone Brown pulled out some great footwork and delivered the ball to De Goey but only managed a point. Carlton responded with yet another goal. The Pies smothered 3 in a row but didn’t follow up and Carlton kicked another goal. Collingwood won the clearance and Reid marks the ball and quickly passes it on to a waiting Phillips who goals. And it was Collingwood again with a neat kick from Brown to Grundy for his second goal. The Blues add another point just before the siren. The scores were level going into the main break.
The third term saw Mihocek lead the way by playing in front, marking and kicking a quick goal for the Pies. Carlton capitalised on Collingwood’s errors and added another goal to their tally giving them a one-point lead over the Pies. Phillips threaded the eye of the needle with a clever kick to Stephenson who passed it to Brown and added another welcome goal to the black and white tally. Brown also added another point to the total from a set shot. Curnow (Carlton) goaled and levelled the scores again. The Blues scored another 2 goals making it three in a row for them. Grundy added another point and then De Goey took a one-handed mark and scored his first goal for the game. The Blues added another point. Grundy and Reid delivered the ball to Hoskin-Elliott who gave Collingwood another goal. Carlton responded with a goal and Treloar added another point. Carlton led by 5 points going into the final break.
The final quarter saw the Blues run out of steam and the Pies put their foot down. Treloar goaled after the combined efforts of Reid and Hoskin-Elliott. Mihocek and Stephenson worked well to give Stephenson another goal. Mihocek still in the thick of it earned a free and took a shot at goal. Carlton scored another two goals in quick succession and added a point. Crisp marked the ball and kick from around 70 metres out and scored a much-needed goal for Collingwood with about 5 minutes left of the game. It opened the Collingwood flood gates and Brown soccered the next goal off the ground as did De Goey. Phillips added another goal to the black and white tally which really was the nail in the coffin for Carlton and saw many Carlton supporters leave the G. Collingwood’s kick placement was on and Hoskin-Elliott took a great mark and scored the final goal for the game. Giving Collingwood 5 goals in a row and the win by 19 points.

Final Score  Pies  10  13 73           Blues 10  9  69   Pies by 19 points
My Take
Wow! What a game. Collingwood struggled with behinds yet again but it’s nice to know that we are not the only team in the league that have this problem. The Pies started the chipping backwards again. I understand why it is done but it should not be a go to. If it is not done well it can be expensive. And as much as it was a messy game and Collingwood applied plenty of pressure when it was our turn with the ball, the decision making was just not there. We didn’t dominate the clearances and we had a lot less disposals than the opposition. We also lacked second and third efforts especially after a smother. I think the team started to gel in third quarter even though we finished the third quarter down by 5 points. For the bulk of the game we struggled in our 50 and had trouble breaking through opposition defence and converting. But what was great was the last 5 minutes of the game when the Magpies attack was relentless. Every player gave their all and it appears that Carlton lacked the stamina to sustain the savage Magpie attack. Thankfully we got over the line by 19 points. A good contest but not for the first 90 percent of the game for the Collingwood faithful. I think we can learn from this game and put it behind us. Bring on next week against St Kilda. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap Up   Collingwood v Port Adelaide, Marvel Stadium Friday 3 May 2019

5/7/2019

Collingwood opened the match with fast play. Their quick hands made Ports look, at times, as though they were standing still. Ports swarmed the Pies 50 early in an effort to stop a quick score. Ben Reid was a welcome inclusion in the side and had an early shot at goal. His accuracy was on, but it was touched on the line. Stephenson’s had his quarter of the season and was effective in defence, mid field and snapping for goal. One of those snaps was the pies first goal. Grundy sent a beautiful kick Stephenson’s way to give him his second goal. At this stage Ports had only managed 2 behinds. Hoskin-Elliott , De Goey and Stephenson combined but only managed a point for their impressive work. Thomas had a good work rate and kicked to Mihocek who added 6 points to the Pies growing tally. Thomas continued at his productive best with a tidy kick to Elliott which gave Collingwood their 5th goal. Meanwhile Stephenson had yet another snap at goal but only managed a point. Crisp took a strong mark and passed it to Thomas but only added a point to the total. Reid used his strong marking skills and passed to Elliott for his second goal. Thomas snapped and added another point and Pendlebury gave a beautiful feed to De Goey, but he only managed a point from a set shot. Langdon was handing out strong tackles and Moore was valuable in defence and in the middle of the ground. Great team work between Treloar and Elliott saw a hand ball to Beams and another black and white goal. Pies led by 45 points at the first break and had more than 120 disposals in the first quarter.
Ports received an absolute roasting from their coach at quarter time with Lycett on the receiving end of a very public spray. It seemed to work as Ports opened the second quarter with a goal. Pies attempted a reply, but it was touched on the line. Mihocek fed Reid who was well positioned a beautiful kick in front of goals and Reid ran through and scored his first goal since coming back into the AFL. Thomas added another point. Ports managed to clock up 4 goals against the Pies in what can only be described as lack lustre and Collingwood in need of some set shot practice.
Ports came out swinging after the main break and the Pies were slow to adjust but adjust, they did. Hoskin-Elliott goaled from a feed by De Gooey who was fabulous as a deep forward. Stephenson fired up again with a kick to beams which went out on the full. Moore and Roughead started to lift in defence and Sidebottom applied pressure midfield and read the play with a nice intercept. This effort from Sidebottom spurred the Pies on for a sensational comeback. Langdon took an intercept and had a shot at goal and why not, but only managed to add another point. Mihocek was great in the clearance and sent a huge kick to De Goey which gave the Pies another goal. Lots of hands got the ball to Reid but he only managed a point. The kick in saw the Magpies swarm and Treloar had an awesome snap and produced probably the goal of the season. Reid and Mihocek both added another point to the Pies growing tally.
The Pies scored 3 goals to 1 from Ports in the 3rd quarter and led by 40 points going into the last break.
The final term saw Collingwood absolutely fired up with an early goal from Stephenson after some great team work from Elliott. Crisp handballs to Moore who kicks to Stephenson then a pass to Mihocek produces another goal for Collingwood. Pendlebury pulled out a hard tackle from his bag of tricks against Powell-Pepper and got the call. Phillips was fantastic all game with second and third efforts. Ports managed a goal. Brown and Sidebottom did a bit of give and go up the field and Phillips kept applying the pressure, but Ports managed to another 2 goals, giving Lycett his second goal. Howe handed out some hard tackles while Maynard and Moore used team work to clear the Ports 50. Howe gave us a great mark which we have come to expect each game which lead to Sidebottom goaling. Elliott took a classy one-handed mark and Brown with the footwork of a salsa dancer, worked his way around the opposition and got the ball off to Treloar who went for a run, had 2 bounces and gave Elliott the opportunity to goal but only managed a point. An outstanding quarter of football by Collingwood and a good win.
Final Score Pies 1  18  108    Ports  10  9  69  Pies by 39 points
My Take
It was an emotional week for all down at the Holden Centre with little Kyron McGuire visiting to fulfil a dream of meeting his favourite team and his idol, Adam Treloar. A win was important for the team and for this little boy. The Club has rallied around this family and given them some comfort and joy at a very difficult time. My heart goes out to his family and I’m so glad and impressed at the lengths that the Collingwood football club went to. I’m sure it created some very fond memories and a lot of happiness.
What a cracking first quarter by Collingwood. If the Pies could produce 4 quarters of footy like that then they really would be unstoppable. However, it was pointed out to me that every game that Collingwood play is a big game for one reason or another so player fatigue and injures need to be managed. I know the second quarter wasn’t great but so far Collingwood are winning their games in the first quarter so not all bad. Channel 7 never give us the full view but from what I could see our woeful second quarter was due to some midfield players being rested. And it goes without saying that the team really need set shot practice. If we can get those ones in, we would have an enormous lead and could probably try some of the other combinations of players that people are talking about i.e. Mihocek, Reid and Cox all in the same game.
Looking forward to Collingwood against the Blues next week. Could be the week to test the waters for the above combo. Either way it will be another good game. So many outstanding players I don’t  think anyone went unnoticed. What a team! Go Pies!

The game got off to a flying start with both teams needing a fourth win under their belts. The Pies won the toss and put the first point on the board. Both teams struggled to get the ball inside their 50 as defence from both sides was relentless. Langdon was very valuable early on and Moore got the better of Daniher with a 50-metre penalty on top of it but could only find a point. A sneaky intercept by Varcoe and quick pass to Mihocek saw the Pies score their first goal and set up the game. Brown got in on the action but could only manage a behind. Moore made Stringer work hard and continually got the better of him and Greenwood showed just what a great inclusion he was with his run and carry and strong defensive efforts. Multiple quick hands under pressure gave De Goey the snap at goal and another 6 points for Collingwood. Hoskin-Elliott proved he was more than ready for battle taking an impressive horizontal mark and a kick to Stephenson who selflessly gave the ball to Adams for the goal. De Goey continued with his high work rate and added another point to the tally. Treloar was his usual athletic self and brought the ball up through the centre of the ground to De Goey who sent a quick chip to Hoskin-Elliott to give Collingwood yet another goal. The Pies led by 23 points into the first break.
The second term started with charity to the Bombers giving them their second goal. Stephenson added another point to the black and white tally and Cox had his eye on the ball and the target and goaled for the Pies. Howe was flying high and marking beautifully and Grundy was beating Daniher in the marking contest. De Goey’s kick placement was perfect as Thomas marked the ball in front of goals and scored for the Pies. The Bombers replied with a point. Beams showed his value in the midfield with second and third efforts and muscling out the opposition. Grundy hit his target in Cox which led to another goal. The Bombers responded with a goal. Fast hands and plenty of space allowed the Bombers one more goal before the main break. Collingwood led by 15 points at half time.
The Pies had a shaky start to the third quarter giving the Bombers another goal. Hoskin- Elliott showed that he was happy to be back giving the fans and commentators something to talk about with his impressive leaps for marks and Howe delivering the same up the other end of the field. Clever play and fancy footwork by De Goey saw him mark in front of goal but only add a point. Sidebottom worked hard and managed a kick from the sideline giving Collingwood a much-needed goal. The Bombers attempted to respond but were contained by the strong and relentless Magpie defence. The Pies were caught off guard by the Bombers’ fast footwork giving them another goal. Stephenson added another point and a goal to Collingwood’s total and the Bombers were given a free and a goal after a questionable chopping call. The Magpies led by 9 points at the final break.
The final term of the game saw both teams working hard with the Bombers unable to break through the outstanding black and white defence. The Bombers added a point and Collingwood responded with two points. It was then goal for goal, De Goey for the Pies and a behind by Treloar. After a battle of titanic proportions Collingwood’s defensive efforts got them the win by just 4 points.

Final Score  Pies  10  13 73           Bombers 10 9  69   Pies by 4 points
My Take
Collingwood’s defence was outstanding this week and the first quarter was our best. And whilst there were plenty of unforced errors every player gave their all. There was some clever play and very fancy footwork demonstrating great skill and natural athleticism, but all this is wasted if the team are unable to settle and play their best game. We struggled with accuracy in goals again this week and we could use a little more practise with kick placement. It was good to see Brown settling in a little more this week and Moore cleverly adjusting his game in order to even up the competition. Hoskin-Elliott did a fantastic job given that he came back a little early and I’m hoping that he will be an inclusion from now on. I personally think we missed Mayne this week and I’m looking forward to his return although no one is sure when that is.
One thing that I will mention that I have noticed every week is that Varcoe seems to be free a lot and asking for the ball. I’m not sure if the player with the ball is looking beyond him or before him but they need to look for him as a means of getting the ball within kicking distance of the goals. Conversely Varcoe could be a little early for the player with the ball but if we are going to play a fast style of game then we need to look for him.
The umpiring at times this week was woeful and even the players thought there was an opportunity or two for the whistle. And it’s not as simple as no whistle then play on because we have been heavily penalised for this previously. Unfortunately, these monkeys are part of our circus, so we need to get on with the game, expect the best and accept the worst.
Our Captain, Pendlebury, was well deserving of the Anzac medal and all the accolades that go with it. He had a great game and was consistently good across all four quarters. As for the booing, I need to touch on this, you can make whatever excuses you want for it, but it really was poor behaviour and unwarranted. There is a time and place and Anzac Day was not the place and at the Anzac medallist was not the time. Pendlebury was clearly confused by the booing and showed great composure. Bucks was terrific and stood by his Captain. What a team, what a game, what a win. Bring on Ports at Marvel Stadium.

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Brisbane V Collingwood AFL - The Gaba Thursday 18 April 2019

The Pies got off to a flying start with Treloar putting in second efforts from the first whistle. This helped De Goey score an easy goal. The Lions casual chipping backwards around the Pies goal area saw clever play from Elliott as he flicked the ball to Mihocek, who soccered off the ground for another Magpie goal. Brisbane responded with a goal which was followed by a single point by Pendlebury. Sidebottom put in plenty of effort only to be caught with the ball. A turn over gave Phillips the opportunity to goal but he could only manage a point as his main target, Cox was covered by 2 defenders in the goal square. An intercept by Thomas and some great team work got the ball to Stephenson and the Pies were rewarded with a goal. The Lions replied with another goal and kept the Magpie defence very busy with Crisp giving his all. The Lions had a tidy game coming up to their 50 and managed another goal. Varcoe responded with a point. Some quick hands from Aish to Cox and then to Thomas saw Thomas taken high and given a free that produced another black and white goal. Handy work from the team work horse, Treloar, saw Cox kick his first goal and gave Stephenson another goal. The Pies led at the break by 27 points.
The second term saw the Lions come out hard and score an early goal. Cox was covered by defenders and Mihocek copped yet another hit to the head. (I wonder how many of these will be reported.) Langdon was instrumental in some great spoils while Varcoe, Stephenson and Phillips all added points to the tally. McInerney (Brisbane) touched Sidebottom’s very accurate kick to make it a point. Stephenson kicked a beautiful long ball to De Goey and De Goey scored the only black and white goal for the quarter. Phillips earned his pay giving great chase, beating his opponent and used fancy footwork to turn the ball over. Aish left the field after a hit to the back of the head and was reported to be suffering with concussion and didn’t return. Collingwood led at the main break.
The Pies settled into the third quarter quickly with Brown goaling in the first minute. Grundy was highly effective in the ruck and produced a big kick to Mihocek that earned the Pies yet another goal. Pendlebury produced some of his old magic and got the ball to Stephenson on the 50-metre line but he didn’t have the distance so Mihocek added a point to the tally. Elliott used his speed to get the ball to Cox in front of goals and Cox made good giving the Pies another goal. After several attempts the Lions goaled and a penalty gave them another goal and a more respectable score for their efforts. Fantastic team work saw Mihocek score his third goal. Maynard added a point with a snap at goal and Elliott earned a free in front of the posts after a great contest and clocked up yet another goal for Collingwood. A kick from the Captain to Brown saw him produce a clever goal. Pendlebury didn’t rest until the siren went and continued to work the ball forward to Elliott who added another point. The Pies score was more than double the Lions at the final break.
The final term saw Cameron (Brisbane) get a lucky (ridiculous) below the knees call as Moore slipped on the dewy grass. Quick hands and team work sent the ball into the Pies 50 but poor decision making gave the Lions an intercept and a point for their efforts. Stephenson added another point and on a turn over got the ball back to De Goey who goaled for the Pies. Thomas kicked a goal that was contested and eventually awarded. Magpie swooping season came early for the Lions as the Pies ran away with the game.
Final Score  Pies  18  15 123         Lions 8 13 61    Pies by 62 points
My Take
Collingwood changed their style of play this week to a nice quick running game which was very effective against Brisbane. They were a very cohesive unit and the mid field combination showed a lot of confidence and was very productive. The defence from all players was outstanding especially the backs and our ruckman gave extra all game. Players also lowered their eyes for kicks inside 50 this week giving a better result, and some showed a bit of flair taking intercepts that created turn overs and scoring opportunities. All in all, it was a much better game for the Pies and good to watch. In all this good there are still a few issues to iron out and I’m sure that whilst Bucks was happy with the result, he would want to tidy a few things up. On the odd occasion there was a lack of communication with players working against each other by going for the same ball. This is not peculiar to Collingwood, other teams also struggled with this. If it is as simple as calling “Mine” then let’s implement it. We also need to capitalise on Cox being double defended. He needs to drag the opposition away and allow the other smaller players to come through for the ball. It won’t work every time but, on the occasions that it does it could help us bag a goal.
I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again, our accuracy is not what it should be. Sure, we bagged 18 goals which is fantastic but it’s the 15 behinds and the shots that went out of bounds that bother me. I’m sure it will improve, but in the meantime let’s keep practising. Also, some of our younger and less experienced players are struggling with decision making. I’m sure no one will call them a ball hog if they take the shot and get it. These players are passing the ball off when they are in a great position to have a shot at goal and conversely, they are going for goal when they should be passing it off. I don’t think it’s a lack of leads I think It’s a lack of vision and the ability to make a split-second decision. I know this will come with coaching and time, but it is important, and I think it will help our bottom line.
Also, I feel it pertinent to mention that some of our defenders need to lift their eyes as we had a couple of kicks go straight to the opposition in front of their goals. Nothing to be dropped over just a simple adjustment of where to look. And AGAIN, with the chipping backwards! I did say previously that it would result in an intercept and a goal to the opposition and sure enough Brisbane were astute enough to capitalise on this ‘play’ and score. We did the same to them, but it just proves that it is not the best game plan.
To sum up the Pies are starting to hit their straps and come together nicely and there are shades of 2018 but much earlier this year. Now that we have done all the experimenting with styles of play and who goes where, it’s times to get on and win the rest of the season. Bring on the Anzac Day match. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Collingwood V Western Bulldogs AFL – MCG Friday 12 April 2019

Both teams came out hard with the bulldogs very aggressively handing out dangerous tackles, none of which were paid. Mayne damaged himself when he landed awkwardly and unfortunately spent the rest of his 200th game in the rooms and from what we are told probably on the green whistle. The Pies struggled with their kick placement and De Goey waited around for calls that were slow to eventuate. A long kick from Mihocek to De Goey finally saw a free go his way and with that he scored the first goal of the game and for the Pies. Collingwood used some nice give and go up the field to work the ball forward into their 50. Roughead worked diligently in defence but it was not enough to stop Bontempelli having a shot for goal and hitting the post. Once again, the Pies did their backwards dance either due to no leads or leads that were too early. Mihocek worked hard to get the ball through the centre of the ground and Grundy added a behind to the tally. De Goey had a snap shot and gave the Pies yet another point. The bulldogs had another 2 shots at goal with the most accurate being tapped by Cox and leaving the hungry doggies goalless for the first quarter. The quarter was slow all around with not just the players at a jog but the umpires as well.
The Pies came flying out of the blocks in the second term with Varcoe scoring a goal, the Pies second for the game. The Bulldogs responded with a goal after a free for a dangerous tackle. Phillips was rewarded with a free plus 50 metres, which was closer to 60 but I think that the extra 10 was for the unprovoked smack in the head to Adams, the result was a goal. Both Varcoe and De Goey added a point to the Collingwood total. The Pies were caught off guard and the Doggies scored their second goal and Adams scored another behind in response. Thomas took a shot at goal and gave Collingwood another 6 points. The Mullet responded with a goal for the Doggies and Elliott attempted a shot at goal after a very hard smack in the head (hopefully a report) but only managed a point. The Pies led at the main break by 11 points.
The third term saw the Pies start quickly with a shot at goal but no score. The Doggies replied with a goal, their 3rd for the game. Stephenson and Phillips both added a point to the black and white tally and some great team work with a beautiful kick by Aish to De Goey failed to increase the score. By late in the third term the Bulldogs started to dictate play and Collingwood were chasing. The Doggies added another goal to their tally and levelled the score. Varcoe and Elliott worked very hard in defence, but the Doggies made something out of nothing and led by a goal. Crisp added a much-needed point to the Pies tally. Cox interrupted the play and passed the ball to Elliott giving the Pies a goal and the lead by 1 point. A mismatch and slow reaction time saw the Doggies score another goal. Great team work between Varcoe and Stephenson gave the Pies another goal and put the Doggies on notice. The Bulldogs led by 5 points at the ¾ time break.
The start of the final quarter saw the Bulldogs dictate the style of play. Team work and a lack of whistle gave Phillips his second goal and with this, Collingwood remembered who they were and started playing their own style of game. Elliott pulled out all stops but only managed a point and De Goey rushed a shot to no avail. The Mullet attempted another goal but only produced a point leaving the Doggies to wonder if they could get the game back. Mihocek added yet another point and the Bulldogs used the middle channel and scored a goal to keep themselves in the game. Cox responded with a goal after a big mark. The Pies kept coming with multiple unsuccessful shots at the target. Cox pulled out a smother and Josh Thomas was on the receiving end of the feed and goaled around the 5-minute mark. Not to be out done, Stephenson goaled 30 seconds later with some help from Cox and Thomas. The Doggies managed to sneak one more goal in through the messy Collingwood defence. Elliott snapped and put the Doggies to bed with a final goal giving the Pies the win and some comfort prior to round 5.
Final Score:  Pies 11 12 78            Bulldogs 9 10 64   Pies by 14 points
My Take
I know I sound like a broken record but I’m going to say it again; why are Collingwood allowing the opposition to dictate their style of play. We have seen what they can do, and they can do it for the whole game (think back to round 1 and 2) so it’s not a matter of fitness. The game starts out badly and ends up worse. The umpires were definitely adding to the mess with their complete lack of whistle, especially in the first quarter. This was the same last week. Just wondering if the umpires are inexperienced or so confused by all the changes that they no longer know what to call. I guess they also need to ascertain if players are trying it on, especially with the below the knees calls. (insert angry face here)
Accuracy is yet another issue that really needs some work, both set shots and snaps. And the little glimmers we get of team work or what looks like a drill they do at training; these things work so do more of those things. Another issue is decision making or is that a thinly veiled lack of confidence? Our goal kickers don’t know when to kick and when to pass off. This has been apparent in every game this season. If it comes down to confidence, then practise and correct technique are the answers and if it’s not that then it’s time for the team psych to step in for a chat. Either way this team is not in the same head space as it was last year and at times appears to lack cohesion. I know it’s early in the season, but it really is time to knuckle down and iron out the small stuff that becomes big stuff in a game. On paper, Collingwood are the team to beat and perhaps it’s just a matter of time before we find our feet, but we really need to hurry things along. The last 10 minutes of last night’s game was the Pies team we all know and love so let’s bring it for next week and every week thereafter, we have a Grand final to win. Go Pies!

Pretty Black and White Wrap UP Collingwood V West Coast AFL – MCG  Saturday  6 April 2019

Both teams started hard with the bulk of the quarter being scrappy play. Howe seemed to be a good match for Darling and took an outstanding mark which slowed the Eagles play. De Goey put the first goal on the board for Collingwood. Beams was fast and creative out of the centre and the Pies produced a nice running game. Stephenson gave a tidy pass to Cox in front of goals, but the angle was too tight for Cox to add to the board. Phillips was effective in defence and Greenwood showed his aggression with a strong tackle. At this stage Collingwood controlled the game. Mihocek worked hard for the ball and Pendlebury was in the thick of play. A dangerous tackle led to the first goal for the Eagles. De Goey goaled again after a tidy feed from Beams.  Mayne was on fire and Moore showed his athleticism with a run and bounce. Adams used some fancy footwork and gave De Goey a shot at goal. Cox earned a shot at goal after a free went his way and made good on it. Cox also proved to be a good deterrent as the Eagles took a shot for goal. By the first break the Pies led by 10 points.
The Eagles showed determination early and scored the first goal of the second quarter. The Pies attempted a reply with a point by Mayne and then Mihocek responded with a goal. West Coast slowed the game to their pace and started to dictate play. They were rewarded with a goal. This put the Eagles in the lead for the first time in the game and the Collingwood defence had a group huddle to reassess tactics. Taylor Adams delivered the much-awaited goods by delivering a great pass to Treloar giving Collingwood another goal. The Eagles were quick to goal again. At this point in the game the umpiring debacle happened, and Phillips was the patsy. The Eagles capitalised and scored a goal. Cox added another point and Treloar goaled very late in the quarter leaving the Pies with a 9-point deficit at half time.
Parts of the Collingwood defence appeared to be overwhelmed with the Eagles pressing on. Sidebottom produce some great defensive work and got on with his job. Great team work and vision from Phillips saw a nice chip to Sidebottom in front of goals giving him his first goal for the game. De Goey added another point late in the third term as the Eagles continued to dictate.
The final term saw the Pies momentarily take control as the quarter began and Josh Thomas put his 6 points in for the team. Clever play by Ryan gave West Coast another goal. Mihocek gave his all and Taylor Adams was an absolute stand out in the centre. Beams produced a late goal that gave Collingwood a more respectable score on the final siren.
Final Score  Pies  11 10 76             Eagles 15 8 98  Eagles by 22 points
My Take
Collingwood had some good passages of play but, allowed West Coast to dictate the style of play and get inside their heads. Footy is a game of psychological warfare and this week we did not win. When Collingwood played their style of play and stuck to their game plan it worked. Chipping the ball around the defence end brought them unstuck and some poor decision making was very costly indeed. Collingwood underestimated the intelligence of West Coast and their ability to not only read the play but redesign the play. The Pies went from playing a very proactive, productive style of play to reactively chasing the ball. These are all things that can be fixed through training and confidence building. Taylor Adams was outstanding upon his return and is a no brainer for next week.
About the umpires, sigh! It seemed that the umpires barely used their whistles at all in the first quarter making it scrappy and letting a lot of calls go. There were definitely a few free kicks in there for both sides. The mess with Phillips was all on that umpire. Up to that point each time there was a penalty the umpires would name the side that had been awarded penalty not just point and by all appearances, in this instance, the penalty went to Phillips. Upon re-examination of the footage so too thought most of West Coast. A 50-metre penalty just added insult to injury and confused absolutely everyone on and off the field. I’m hoping that it didn’t affect Tom Phillips' confidence and that the AFL makes an effort to explain both calls.
The constant changing of the rules is confusing the players and frustrating the fans. The AFL needs to make a genuine effort to explain the rule changes to players and the fans (after all, the ticket sales pay wages for players and umpires). Too many changes are making it a different game and there is a lot to be said for the simplicity of the old rules. Sure, I’m all for eliminating dangerous tackles and anything that genuinely endangers a player but let’s not turn it into American football because that’s a different game and not the game we love. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Looking forward to next week’s game. Go Pies!

Hi, in a nutshell I love my Pies, Collingwood Magpies that is. I have loved the Black and White since I was 8 years old. I also love my AFL, AFLW and Netball. These are my thoughts on each game and to me it's Pretty Black and White.
